Welcome to New York!
A passenger on a Caribbean Airlines flight went into labor Saturday just before landing at John F. Kennedy Airport. Air traffic control playfully suggested a name for her newborn.
The baby was delivered on Caribbean Airlines Flight 005 while it approached New York just before noon, as noted in air traffic control records.
“Tell her she has to be named Kennedy,” joked JFK’s ground controller to the new mother.
The Boeing 737 Max 8, which was coming from Kingston, Jamaica, transformed into an impromptu delivery room as the pilot requested a swift landing due to the situation.
Audio of the incident revealed the pilot stating, “Flight 3000, please descend Caribbean Flight 005 and perform maintenance. We have a passenger currently due to give birth.”
There was a slight hiccup when the air traffic controller misinterpreted this as a “sick passenger.”
“We have a pregnant passenger who is currently due to give birth,” the pilot clarified.
The plane received clearance for a direct approach, and medical crews were ready at the gate.
“Kennedy Tower, Caribbean Airlines Flight 005, direct 2,000 ZETAL descending 2,200 degrees, carrying a woman in labor,” the pilot announced.
After landing, JFK ground controllers welcomed the flight and inquired about the baby’s condition.
“Caribbean Five, we’re on the ground. Have you left yet?” the airport staff asked, to which the pilot confidently replied, “Yes, sir.”
The health of both the mother and the newborn was not immediately reported.
This isn’t the first instance of a baby being born on a flight to JFK. In January 2015, a 33-year-old woman went into labor aboard a Royal Jordanian flight, with onboard medical staff assisting her. The plane landed two hours after the birth, and both mother and child were taken to Jamaica Hospital in Queens, reported to be in good condition.
