Passenger takes airport vehicle at John Wayne Airport in California and crashes it

A chaotic situation unfolded at John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana, California, on October 6, when a traveler caused a stir by commandeering an airport tug. Around 5:30 p.m., the 26-year-old man from Everett, Washington, reportedly accessed the airfield through Gate 12 before taking control of the vehicle and driving it recklessly around the premises, even backing it up near a plane.

He was meant to board a Delta Air Lines flight headed for Seattle. According to reports, Delta Airlines is working closely with law enforcement in response to this unusual event.

A spokesperson expressed that Delta has a strict policy against unlawful behavior, emphasizing the importance of safety and security for all customers and staff. After breaching the airfield, the individual took an Alaska Airlines tug, a vehicle typically used for transporting bags and equipment. Video footage captured him as he drove the tug erratically and backed it up close to an aircraft.

Later, it was reported that he crashed the tug into another vehicle near Gate 7 and made an attempt to take an American Airlines lavatory service truck before being apprehended by airport police. Fortunately, there were no disruptions to airport operations due to this incident.

Following his arrest, which was on charges of vehicle theft, trespassing, and vandalism, the man was taken to a local hospital for evaluation. Although the events were alarming, officials reassured that airport operations were not impacted.

This wasn’t the first bizarre airport incident; previously, another intoxicated individual had stolen a small plane in Hungary, but that’s a different story altogether.
