Pat McAfee Offers Advice to Rory McIlroy Amid Media Challenges
Pat McAfee shared some straightforward advice for Rory McIlroy regarding his recent media troubles: “Just tell them to kiss your ass.”
“Honestly, Rory, I admire everything you do,” McAfee mentioned on his show, suggesting that McIlroy should set boundaries with the media. “If you need to take time for yourself, do it. It’s fantastic to see you play such great golf.”
After winning the Masters in April, McIlroy experienced tension with the media over his hesitation to speak up at certain points.
The 36-year-old golfer faced significant backlash for skipping media sessions following his struggles at the PGA Championship in May. In his defense, McIlroy described that week as “strange” and brought up his frustrations regarding leaks about equipment non-conformities.
He also pointed out that, unlike leagues like the NBA, NFL, and MLB, the PGA Tour doesn’t require golfers to hold press conferences.
McAfee emphasized that athletes shouldn’t feel obligated to provide explanations. “You know, sometimes you just need a break. Even I took time off from WWE when I felt burnt out. If Rory is feeling that way, he’s entitled to his space,” he said.
Following a strong performance at the Scottish Open where he secured second place, McIlroy is now aiming for a major title at the Open Championship, taking place at Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland.
