The Brewers made history on Saturday by clinching the first playoff spot in Major League Baseball, and the late Bob Uecker, a beloved broadcasting figure, was renowned for his celebratory spirit following games.
Although Uecker passed away in January, Milwaukee’s manager, Pat Murphy, shared a heartfelt message believed to be from him after the team defeated the Cardinals. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported that the message was given to Murphy by team owner Mark Attanasio as a tribute, casting some uncertainty on whether Uecker actually penned it.
“Hey, team. I’m sure you received this. You believed and made it happen. I truly miss you all. God has chosen me to be on his team up here, even though I was just a third-string catcher,” the message read.
The note further remarked on the team’s tenacity: “I told the big guy about you. You play hard every night and aren’t afraid to compete. He’s definitely taken notice of this unique quality… Your achievement of having the best record in baseball hasn’t gone unnoticed either.”
After reading the tribute, Murphy raised a champagne glass, proposing a toast to Uecker, the team, and their accomplishments up to that point.
Currently, the Brewers boast an impressive record of 91-58. They haven’t reached the World Series since 1982 but have managed to make the playoffs in seven out of the last eight seasons.
Uecker was a Brewers broadcaster from 1971 until 2024. Besides his sports commentary, he starred in the “Major League” films and was a familiar face on the sitcom “Mr. Belvedere.”
A true icon known as “Mr. Baseball,” Uecker received the Ford Frick Award for broadcasting excellence and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2003.
He succumbed to lung cancer on January 16th. This season, the Brewers are honoring his memory by wearing a patch on their uniforms.
