About 500,000 members of Patelco Credit Union, which has branches in the Bay Area and Northern California, are unable to access banking services after what its chief executive officer called a “serious security incident” over the weekend.
The Dublin, Alameda County-based credit union made the announcement at 7 a.m. and said services including online banking, mobile apps, direct deposits, money transfers and debit and credit card transactions were unavailable.
Patelco members received an email from President and CEO Erin Mendez about the security incident, but details about the incident were not disclosed.
As of 11:30 a.m. Monday, Patelco’s website was still not functioning.
The email said the credit union was working with cybersecurity experts to assess the situation and restore service, but Mendez said he didn’t know how long that might take.
Patelco is the 27th largest credit union in the United States with $9.8 billion in assets and 455,000 members with over 1 million accounts. The not-for-profit credit union has 37 branches throughout the Bay Area and Sacramento region. Patelco is one of the oldest credit unions in the United States, founded in 1936 for employees of Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company (now AT&T).
