Patrick Ewing Encourages Youth to Seize Opportunities
NBA legend Patrick Ewing shared insights on his mission to empower kids, emphasizing the importance of taking advantage of every opportunity, big or small.
Originally from Kingston, Jamaica, Ewing immigrated to the United States as a child. He expressed gratitude towards his parents for their sacrifices, which allowed them to achieve significant success in their new home.
At an event at Kipp Charter School in New York, he praised gatherings like the Kipp Cup Basketball Tournament, calling them “great” for local children. Ewing reflected on his own journey, stating, “I’m from Jamaica… Many black and brown individuals have immigrated and done remarkably well. Each time I visit my family grave, I thank my parents for bringing me here and helping me realize my dreams.”
“I share this with my kids: it doesn’t matter if you’re an immigrant or a native-born American. What truly counts is the opportunity you have. When it comes your way, embrace it. Find your passion. Don’t let anyone dissuade you from your goals,” he advised. “If I had listened to some naysayers, I wouldn’t be where I am today.”
Ewing, who played college basketball at Georgetown, was the first overall pick in the 1985 NBA Draft by the New York Knicks. Through his illustrious career, he earned All-Star honors 11 times, missing out only once. He concluded his basketball journey with stints at the Seattle SuperSonics and Orlando Magic.
Over his Hall of Fame career, Ewing averaged 21 points and nearly 10 rebounds per game.
