Patrick Kane Returns to the Blackhawks
Blackhawks fans finally found a reason to celebrate this Thursday after a tough year. Patrick Kane is making his return.
The team announced on Wednesday that Kane has agreed to a two-year deal, reportedly valued at an average of $8 million annually.
At 37 years old, Kane is a legendary figure in Blackhawks history, having helped the team secure three Stanley Cups since being drafted first overall in 2007. He spent 16 seasons with the Blackhawks, significantly contributing to their nine consecutive playoff appearances.
In terms of team records, he stands second in points (1,225), third in goals (446), and has played the third-most games (1,161) in franchise history. Over his career, Kane has accumulated several awards, including the Hart Memorial Trophy in 2016 and the Cheyenne Smythe Trophy in 2013.
Following the Blackhawks’ shift to a rebuilding phase in 2023, Kane was traded to the Rangers, where he scored five goals in his first 19 games there. After that, he spent three seasons with the Red Wings, tallying 57 goals and providing 106 assists.
Initially, Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson wasn’t anticipating bringing Kane back for 2024. However, he revisited the idea before this recent signing. “We were just waiting for a decision from him,” Davidson mentioned on a Toronto radio show. “Even if he isn’t in our jersey now, he has always been a Blackhawk in spirit. We respect him immensely.”
Kane’s choice ultimately landed him back with the team, and he will be joining them after a 29-39-14 season. This also marks the first time he’ll play alongside rising star Connor Bedard, drafted by the Blackhawks in 2023.
“I can’t wait to see how it feels for him in that first game back,” Bedard said. “It’ll be exciting for our fans and adds so much to our team. Playing alongside him and learning from him will be incredible.”
While the Blackhawks may be in another rebuilding year, fans are at least getting the chance to watch Kane possibly conclude his career where it all began.
