Mahomes Acknowledges Need for Consistency After Loss to Broncos

Following a narrow 22-19 defeat to the Denver Broncos, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes expressed the need to enhance his consistency. This loss complicates Kansas City’s chances for the playoffs.

In the postgame press briefing, the three-time Super Bowl champion admitted fault for “putting the ball in a dangerous direction” during the game.

“We have a lot of talent and excellent players, but we need to be more consistent. I think that begins with me,” Mahomes remarked. “Sometimes I’m making great plays, and we’re moving effectively down the field, yet at other times I’m missing throws or making poor decisions. We can’t be inconsistent if we want to win games. It starts with me.”

Mahomes struggled with several throws, notably throwing a red zone interception to Broncos cornerback Jaquan McMillian during the third quarter.

Reflecting on that interception, he commented, “You can’t do that. I didn’t elevate the pass enough, and [McMillian] executed well. I’ve made that throw before, but in scenarios like this, it’s crucial to keep the ball safe, get the three points, and move on to the next play.”

Last season, the Chiefs had an impressive 12-0 record in games decided by eight points or less, while this year they have yet to win in five close contests.

“It’s frustrating,” Mahomes admitted. “You need to feel the sting of loss, but we have to channel that into energy for next week and focus solely on the next game. We’ll have another opportunity to show what we can do.”

“Lately, we’ve had some tight losses, but we’ve shown glimpses of good football. Now is the time to be more consistent. Until we show that on the field, we must keep practicing diligently and push ourselves to perform on game day.”

The Broncos turned their three-point deficit into a win with two field goals, while the Chiefs failed to make any significant moves during their last two possessions.

With under a minute left, Denver quarterback Bo Nix completed a 32-yard pass to Troy Franklin, extending the Broncos’ lead and setting up Will Lutz’s decisive 35-yard kick.

With this victory, the Broncos improved to 9-2, sharing the top spot in the AFC with the Patriots.

The Chiefs now sit at 5-5 and face the Colts next Sunday, needing a win to keep their playoff hopes alive. They have not missed the playoffs since 2014.

“It’s going to be challenging to re-enter the division race,” Mahomes stated. “Our objective is to reach the playoffs and progress further. We must take valuable lessons from this game as we prepare for a formidable opponent in the Colts coming to Arrowhead next week.”

“At this juncture, we really need to figure out how to secure a win.”
