Patrick Mahomes’ barber reveals story behind star quarterback’s viral haircut

Patrick Mahomes officially has a new look.

The Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback unveiled his new haircut over the weekend, showing off a rigorous departure from his previous style. Mahomes no longer has his signature Mohawk, a crucial feature of his image in the first eight years of his NFL career.

Now he has a simple cropped style with fades on the sides.

DeJuan Bond, a Mahomes barber who has been cutting quarterback hair since the 2017 rookie year, told Fox News Digital why Mahomes chose to match such a drastic change.

“At the end of the season, I think there's frustration: 'You know what you've done, it's time for a new look, a change.' I said. “It was probably a little bit [frustration]and then it was like, “Hey, you know, it's time for a new look.” ”

Bond later said “probably” that Mahomes “probably” had to say to him that he would cut his hair in a different way like this, but he certainly couldn't say anything.

Bond also said that with this new style, Mahomes wants a more “adult” and “mature” look.

It was not the first time Mahomes proposed the idea of a dramatic change in hairstyle to Bond. The barber said Mahomes previously developed the idea of getting a shorter haircut when he was preparing for the birth of his daughter Sterling, his first child born in February 2021.

But Bond then spoke about Mahomes and nurtured the fact that the quarterback had a notable success with Mohawk. At that point, Mahomes had already won the Super Bowl, the League MVP award, and was promoted to one of the league's greatest players.

“He went into paternity during that time and he had to go ahead and change his hairstyle and didn't want to wear a Mohawk, but we messed around with cutting it a few times. We were superstitious and decided that this is not the time,” Bond said.

“Then it was when we said that after this season.

When Mahomes came to this decision, he first told Bond, “I want to cut it off.”

“In many cases, when someone says 'cutoffs', they really don't know. They're just saying something. “I'll cut it off,” Bond said.

Had Bond listened to Mahomes without pushback, the barber would have put the cut very low on the quarterback and been considered a skin fade.

“It may have been very low, but I know better than that. I know better than following someone's instructions unless they ask multiple times, when they 'cut it off' “I'm saying yes and they're hoping for it all the time off, and I know he doesn't want it,” Bond said.

And I believe that if Mahomes gave him a full “cut-off” treatment, he had the counterproductive effect he was looking for in terms of getting older and trying to mature more.

“I advise him not to do so unless he wants to return to Mahomes, 17,” Bond said. “Even the haircut he just got, it made him look younger, but if I did something like that to him, he would even look younger, he would want to look younger like that You wouldn't think so.”

Instead, Bond proceeded with the haircut he had in mind for Mahomes. As it goes, the TV at Purple Rable Luxury Barber Shop in Overland Park, Kansas, held NBA games, as they were talking about basketball.

While Bond tweeted about Luka Donsic's deal during a haircut before the Super Bowl, Mahomes' ESPN's “SportsCenter” was played on television, and Mahomes' tweets are being discussed minutes after that. I remember seeing it.

Then the quarterback smiled after the haircut was finished and Mahomes' new look solidified.

“He basically smiled and said, 'Yeah, I like it,'” Bond said.

Bond is currently planning to travel Thursday to give Mahomes a follow-up cut.
