Mahomes set up 1st-and-goal with a 13-yard scramble. He tried to get into the end zone, but gave up on his decision to play it safe and slide. He was tackled by Dolphins defensive back Deshaun Elliott. The loud sound of the two helmets breaking was loud enough to be heard by most of the people watching Peacock.

The helmet-to-helmet collision caused Mahomes' helmet to crack. He changed his helmet after two plays. NBC rules analyst Terry McCauley wondered why the clock stopped when changing helmets.

“We changed equipment and the clock stopped. He really had to leave or he would have taken a timeout,” he said on the broadcast.

The Chiefs were unable to finish the drive in the end zone. Kansas City had to settle for a field goal after Isaiah Pacheco's no-gain run and two consecutive incomplete passes.

Up to that point, Mahomes was 19-of-34 for 213 passing yards and one touchdown pass to Laci Rice. He also gained 41 yards on the ground.

Rice had over 100 yards receiving with three minutes left in the third.
