Patrick Mahomes looks back on his father's arrest ahead of Super Bowl victory in new documentary

Kansas City Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes Reflects on Father’s Arrest

In a recent documentary, Patrick Mahomes, the quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs, opened up about a significant event that impacted his father. Patrick Mahomes Sr. was arrested in February 2024 in Tyler, Texas, facing felony DWI charges, just over a week before the Chiefs were set to play the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII.

During a press conference after the game, Patrick discussed his father’s situation and the media coverage surrounding it. In the ESPN documentary “Chiefs Kingdom,” which premiered Wednesday, he described the media frenzy as a pivotal moment for his father.

“During that Super Bowl, it became a story, so I had to answer questions about it,” Mahomes recalled. “I think it hurts me, and it’s tough knowing he can’t just wake up and keep doing things the same way.” His father also shared his feelings in the episode, labeling the experience as one of his most embarrassing struggles.

Reflecting on the incident, Mahomes Sr. said, “It hit the house before that Super Bowl. It was probably the most embarrassing thing I’ve ever experienced, knowing he had to face questions about me.” He expressed regret for taking away his son’s focus during such an important time.

Patrick’s wife, Brittany, weighed in as well, pointing out how the situation affected the family. “I think it finally hit him,” she noted, referring to her husband’s father, “I’m looking at my kids, my grandchildren are looking at me.” This added dimension seemed to amplify the weight of the moment for Mahomes Sr.

In August 2024, Mahomes Sr. entered a guilty plea for his charges, receiving a sentence of 10 days in jail and a five-year probation period. This wasn’t his first encounter with the law regarding alcohol, as he had previous DWI incidents in South Dakota and Texas.

As Patrick continues to excel on the field, these personal challenges remind him of the complexities life can bring, even for those at the pinnacle of success.
