Chiefs Struggle as Mahomes Faces Rare Defeat

This season, Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs find themselves in a bit of an unusual predicament: they’re fighting hard just to stay relevant. It’s not something fans expected, especially after Mahomes had such a stellar run lately.

On Sunday night, Mahomes had perhaps one of the toughest performances of his career, with the Chiefs suffering a 20-10 loss to the Texans at home. This defeat effectively knocked them out of the race for the AFC West title.

Finishing the game, he managed to complete only 14 of 33 passes for 160 yards without a single touchdown. That’s not exactly the stat line anyone would associate with a player of his caliber.

To add to the woes, Mahomes threw three interceptions during the game. This marked the first time this season he had that many picks – a notable decline for him, especially considering it was the first time since December 2022 against the Broncos that he had thrown three.

His completion percentage of 42.4 was a career low; but, maybe, it’s worth noting that it was a rainy night in Kansas City, which might have played a part in his struggles.

“It’s getting late in the season. We’re not going to get this opportunity again,” Mahomes shared with reporters. He acknowledged the Texans’ strength but pointed out that they had had opportunities that slipped away. “We had chances, but didn’t execute at the right time to win.”

The game had its share of moments that spelled disaster for the Chiefs, including a late-game error by Travis Kelce, which ultimately sealed their fate.

With just over three and a half minutes left in the game, Mahomes attempted to connect with Kelce for a potential tying score. Instead, the ball ended up in the hands of Texans linebacker Azeez Al Shair, who intercepted the pass.

Another key moment was when Laci Rice dropped a fourth down pass that could have led to a crucial first down with mere minutes left on the clock. And, unfortunately, the team’s offensive lineman, Wanya Morris, went down with a left knee injury on the very first play of the game, adding to the night’s troubles.

The Texans used the remaining minutes to run a seven-play, 16-yard drive culminating in a field goal that widened their lead. It’s significant that it’s been nine years since the Chiefs lost a division title; now, that honor is likely to go to the Broncos or Chargers.

With a record of six wins and seven losses, the Chiefs are facing their worst start through 13 games since 2012. As the reality sinks in, there’s a growing concern they might not even make the playoffs this time around.

“We still have a chance. It’s a small chance, but we have a chance,” defensive tackle Chris Jones remarked. He seemed hopeful, if not a bit resigned. “As long as there is an opportunity, we can control it and let the cards fall where they fall.”

Adding another layer to the drama, this loss took place right in front of Travis Kelce’s fiancée, Taylor Swift, who attended her first game at GEHA Field since November 23. Talk about a rough homecoming.
