A recent documentary has shed light on the unexpected reactions to Travis Kelce’s romance with Taylor Swift, particularly from Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
In the third episode of ESPN’s Docusary “Kingdom,” it turns out that Mahomes wasn’t the only one caught off guard by the news of Kelce’s relationship with the globally renowned singer.
Before Swift made her highly publicized debut at Arrowhead Stadium in September 2023, Kelce’s teammates shared their excitement as they prepared for an impending game against the Chicago Bears.
Defensive tackle Chris Jones exclaimed, “The locker room was buzzing about Taylor Swift being here. For real?”
He continued, “We were all just like, ‘Oh my god, Travis is dating Taylor Swift!’”
Surprisingly, Mahomes acknowledged the nature of Kelce’s new relationship before many others in the team.
“I could see it, right? I could see it until I believed it,” said Mahomes, a three-time Super Bowl champion.
In footage featured in the documentary, Mahomes can be seen discussing Swift, who is 35, with Kelce during a break.
Mahomes remarked, “That was the first person I noticed. I didn’t see anyone else.” He noted, “You could feel the energy, and fans were clearly drawn to her,” but balanced that with the reality that they had a game to focus on.
After going public with their relationship, Swift and Kelce have spent time with Mahomes and his wife, Brittany, on multiple occasions.
In a post-game interview, Mahomes commented on the new couple. He hadn’t seen Swift in “two weeks” and added, “If she’s with Travis, I’ll probably get to see her one day.”
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid bragged about knowing Swift long before Kelce. He humorously suggested that he played a role in their connection.
“I knew they were going out,” Reid said. “I met her because her dad is a big Eagles fan, and we crossed paths when she had a concert in Philadelphia.”
Swift’s appearance at the stadium undoubtedly caused a stir in the media and fan communities.
“The Swift phenomenon is real, and everyone can feel it,” noted cornerback Trent McDuffy.
Safety Justin Reed added, “The fanbase is just wild. With her in the mix, sports have exploded in popularity. The NFL is thrilled with this.”
