Patriots agree to make Mike Vrabel next head coach: reports

Mike Vrabel will return to Foxborough and lead the New England Patriots on the sidelines rather than on defense, according to reports.

Vrabel agreed to become the Patriots' next head coach on Sunday, one week after the team fired Jerod Mayo after the team's Week 18 win over the Buffalo Bills, according to multiple reports. He has reportedly agreed to a multi-year deal to lead the team.

Mayo lasted just one season at the helm in New England after being named to replace the legendary Bill Belichick. Now, another former Patriots player will be leading the charge.

After New England announced Mayo's firing, Vrabel was the top candidate to take the job. New England interviewed several candidates, including Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, longtime NFL assistant coach Pep Hamilton and Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich.

He spent last season as an assistant with the Cleveland Browns.

As a player, the linebacker played for the Patriots, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Kansas City Chiefs. He won three rings with the Patriots while playing for Belichick.
