Support for Mike Vrabel from Patriots Players
Another New England Patriots player is backing his head coach amid controversies surrounding him.
Star cornerback Christian Gonzalez recently addressed Mike Vrabel’s complicated relationship with former Athletic reporter Deanna Russini when pressed for his thoughts on Vrabel’s remarks to the team. His response? He was quick and decisive.
“I’m not going to talk about what was said inside the building,” Gonzalez shared with reporters. “But, I mean, that’s my coach. That’s who I go out and play for. He’s shown what he can do as a coach. That’s my coach, and I’m supporting him all day.” His loyalty to Vrabel was clear.
Other team leaders, like Hunter Henry and Robert Spillane, have also commented on Vrabel’s situation. Henry expressed a similar sentiment when he stated, “I know you want to hear everything about what’s going on, but to be honest, we’re just focused.” He emphasized that their priority is the team and everything happening within their facility.
Henry made it clear that he wouldn’t be drawn into discussions about off-field issues regarding the head coach. Spillane echoed this, noting, “The coach coaches football. He keeps his focus on football.” There’s respect for Vrabel and a unified front in the locker room despite the surrounding chaos.
Before the draft, the Patriots released a statement affirming their “full support” for Vrabel. They highlighted his honesty about wanting to improve himself for the team and his family, acknowledging the steps he is taking to uphold that commitment.
Vrabel attended the first two nights of the NFL Draft but chose to step back for rounds four through seven to seek counseling.
In his own words, Vrabel pointed out, “I promised to give the best version of myself that I can.” He acknowledged the difficult conversations he’s had about his relationship with Russini, mentioning photographs that have surfaced showing them together in various circumstances.
This situation has caused quite a stir. Indeed, some photos went public depicting Vrabel and Russini in a kiss during an outing back in 2020, further complicating matters.
Interestingly, Russini later married Shake Shack executive Kevin Goldschmidt, and the couple has two children. Vrabel, meanwhile, has been with his wife since 1999, sharing a family of two sons. Both men undoubtedly have a lot to navigate in their personal lives amid professional pressures.
