Stefon Diggs Faces Uncertain Future with Patriots
Just a few weeks after making it to the Super Bowl, the Patriots might part ways with Stefon Diggs if he doesn’t come to terms on a contract restructure. The 32-year-old receiver, who has been an impactful player, may find himself waived unless he agrees to lower his cap hit from a hefty $26.5 million.
Last season, Diggs was a key contributor, leading the Patriots with 85 receptions, accumulating 1,013 receiving yards, and scoring four touchdowns over 17 games. He had signed a three-year deal worth $63.5 million during free agency in March.
However, there are also some serious legal matters hanging over him. A pretrial hearing is set for April 1, as he has pleaded not guilty to charges related to felony strangulation and misdemeanor assault against a woman.
The Patriots, who improved significantly last season under first-year coach Mike Vrabel—from a 4-13 record in 2024 to 14-3—stand to save quite a bit of cash. Releasing Diggs could free up around $16.8 million on their salary cap, or up to $20.8 million if they wait until after June 1.
Diggs also has $6 million in guaranteed money that he’ll need to be paid by March 13. Reports suggest that the team is working toward a resolution, and they hope to have things settled shortly.
Another source hinted that Diggs might be hesitant to renegotiate his deal and mentioned that he is already in discussions about finding a way to maintain his level of production with quarterback Drake Maye.
Interestingly, there are murmurs about the Patriots possibly bringing in AJ Brown from the Eagles as a trade target. Brown, who played for Vrabel during his time with the Titans, recorded 78 catches, 1,003 yards, and seven touchdowns last year in Philadelphia. He comes with a $23.4 million cap hit and is slated to earn $29 million in the last year of his three-year contract.
So, the situation remains a bit murky. Will Diggs stay, or will he move on? A lot hinges on these negotiations in the coming weeks.
