The New England Patriots announced that defensive tackle Christian Barmore was diagnosed with a blood clot over the weekend and is currently receiving treatment at Massachusetts General Brigham Hospital.

The diagnosis means Barmore, the team’s second-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, will be out indefinitely.

“Our primary concern at this time is Christian’s health and well-being,” the Patriots said in a statement. “Fortunately, Massachusetts General Brigham Hospital provides some of the best medical care in the world.”

“There is currently no timetable for a return, but Christian is receiving excellent treatment and we expect him to make a full recovery.”

This could have been a more serious medical situation, and Barmore’s agent, Nicole Lin, posted to X thanking Patriots head trainer Jim Whalen.

“It would be remiss of me not to thank Patriots trainer Jim Whalen for his extraordinary hard work and care over the past few days,” Lin posted on X. “Without Jim’s tenacity and expertise, today’s game may have gone very differently.”

NFL Network reported that Barmore had a bruise on the back of his calf that “was thought was nothing,” but Whalen insisted he had it checked out to make sure it was nothing.

“It could have been the worst thing that could have happened to Christian Barmore if he hadn’t been treated,” Ian Rapoport said Sunday.

Barmore, who turned 25 on July 28, is in his third season with the Patriots in 2023 and recorded career-highs of 8.5 sacks and 64 tackles in 17 games (six starts).

That’s why the Patriots signed him to a four-year extension worth up to $92 million, including the $41.8 million guaranteed he had before the final year of his rookie deal.

Barmore was expected to be the starter this year, but as the Patriots said in a statement, football is not their primary concern at this time.

The team has dealt with players suffering from blood clots in the past: Longtime center David Andrews was diagnosed with a blood clot in his lungs in 2019. Andrews finally returned to play in 2020 and remains with the team in his 10th season.
