Clippers and Paul George never got close to an agreement, Los Angeles He said in a statement released Sunday night.
After word leaked that George was headed elsewhere, the Clippers released a lengthy statement about what happened.
“We made a lot of trades to pair Paul with Kawhi. [Leonard] ]Instead, we competed for five seasons,” the statement read. “While we fell short of our ultimate goal, we are grateful for the opportunity we had.”
In a statement, the Clippers also said: [negotiating] The gap was noticeable.”
They said they wanted to keep both George and James Harden under contract so they could continue building a championship-contending team.

According to ESPN, the 76ers are considered the front-runner to acquire George.
Harden reportedly agreed to a two-year contract worth $70 million.

The Clippers could have offered the 34-year-old George a four-year, $221 million contract but were reportedly unwilling to give him a fourth year.
