Paul George declines $48.7M option with Clippers, becoming free agent: reports

The NBA free agent market is getting very interesting.

Paul George, who was due to make $48.7 million in 2024-25, is reportedly opting out of his final season with the Los Angeles Clippers and set to become a free agent.

There’s still a chance the two sides can come to an agreement, but he’s apparently determined to meet with the other two teams.

According to reports, after meeting with the Clippers, George is also scheduled to meet with the Philadelphia 76ers and Orlando Magic, both teams that made the playoffs last season.

The 34-year-old George is coming off the best season of his career, averaging 22.6 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game while posting career-highs in shooting percentages (47.1 percent), 3-point shooting percentages (41.3 percent) and free throw percentages (90.7 percent). He was named to his ninth All-Star game.

George and the Clippers were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the eventual Western Conference champions, the Dallas Mavericks.

His 74 games played were his most since joining the Clippers in 2019.

The Sixers could have been better than they were last season with 2022-23 MVP Joel Embiid healthy, while the Magic are a young, promising team making the playoffs for the first time since 2020.

Assuming LeBron James opts out of his contract and remains with the Lakers, George suddenly becomes the hottest free agent on the market.

If he were to go to the City of Brotherly Love, Orlando, he would likely form a Big Three with Embiid and rising star Tyrese Maxey, who also owns 2022 No. 1 overall pick Paolo Banchero and 2021 No. 5 overall pick Jalen Suggs.

George teamed up with Kawhi Leonard and James Harden last season, but Leonard missed the playoffs due to a lingering knee injury, and while Harden performed well, the combination of Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic was a formidable opponent for the Clippers.

The Clippers will move to a new arena next season, but who knows if George will call it home.
