Paul Pelosi, husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, is facing a misdemeanor hit-and-run charge after reportedly crashing his vehicle into a parked car in Napa County, California, and leaving the scene. This incident occurred on Friday afternoon in Yountville, which is situated more than an hour north of San Francisco, as noted by the local sheriff’s office.
Witnesses claimed to have seen a brown convertible hit an unoccupied vehicle before continuing northward. Deputies later located a damaged convertible that was partially obstructing a nearby road, identifying the driver as 86-year-old Paul Pelosi.
During questioning, Pelosi allegedly admitted to deputies that she was aware of having collided with something, though she wasn’t certain what it was. Investigators indicated that he kept driving until the vehicle became inoperable.
The sheriff’s office clarified that alcohol was not contributing to the incident, stating, “Due to investigation, DUI was ruled out as testing revealed no alcohol (0.00 on the preliminary breathalyzer).” After determining Pelosi was responsible for the accident, deputies did not arrest him at the scene—a standard procedure for such misdemeanors. The case will be referred to the Napa County District Attorney’s Office for further evaluation.
Additionally, authorities will submit a referral to the California DMV for a re-evaluation of his driving qualifications, which is routine for older drivers.
This situation arises over two years after Pelosi pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor DUI charge linked to a separate collision in May 2022. At that time, he received a sentence that included three years of probation and five days in jail, mostly served through work programs and a DUI education course.
Unlike that past incident, investigators have stated that drunken driving was ruled out in this most recent crash. Pelosi has also stayed in the public eye following a violent attack in October 2022, where he was assaulted with a hammer in their San Francisco home.
David DePape, who broke into the Pelosi residence seeking Nancy Pelosi, received a life sentence on state charges for the attack that resulted in significant injuries for Paul Pelosi, including a fractured skull.
Throughout her lengthy political career, Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi has represented San Francisco’s 11th district.
