Paul Pelosi, the husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, has been charged with hit-and-run following an incident earlier this month, according to authorities. The Napa County District Attorney’s Office announced the charges on Friday, detailing that Pelosi, 86, faces accusations related to a crash on July 3.
The criminal complaint states that he allegedly struck a parked Tesla and then left the scene without providing any required information to the vehicle’s owner. Officers later found him about half a mile away, where he supposedly claimed he meant to return to the site of the accident.
Officials noted that the charges stem from both the hit-and-run and unsafe turning incidents. Interestingly, the district attorney’s office doesn’t usually publicize misdemeanor hit-and-run cases that involve only property damage, but they made an exception in this case due to the high level of public and media attention surrounding Pelosi.
At the time of the crash, Pelosi was driving a burgundy Maserati convertible. He is a venture capitalist and has been a longtime resident of Napa County. The complaint, however, does not mention whether anyone else was in the vehicle during the incident.
Notably, this isn’t the first time Pelosi has faced traffic-related legal issues. In 2022, he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor DUI after a separate accident in Napa County, resulting in probation, fines, and other penalties, including completing a DUI education program. He also has a history of traffic violations across various Bay Area counties involving speeding and running red lights.
Pelosi is set for his initial court appearance on August 14 in Napa County Superior Court.
