Paul Simon Cancels Concerts Due to Back Pain
It still stings after all these years.
Musical icon Paul Simon had to pull the plug on two concerts this weekend, citing “chronic and intense back pain.” The 83-year-old, known for hits like “You Can Call Me Al,” was set to perform at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia on Saturday, June 28th, and Sunday, June 29th.
Simon took to Instagram just before Saturday’s show to announce that the concerts had been “unfortunately” canceled because of his unexpected health issues.
In a statement, it was noted, “Unfortunately, Paul Simon will have to cancel two shows at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia tonight on June 28th and tomorrow night. Paul is suffering from chronic, severe back pain. Today, it’s becoming unmanageable and we are seeking medical attention soon.”
Simon also mentioned that he would be undergoing “minor surgical procedures” aimed at alleviating his lower back pain, expressing hope that he could “complete the tour” post-surgery.
The statement continued, “At this point, we need to cancel these shows because we can’t reschedule them. However, after the minor procedure scheduled for the coming days, Paul hopes not only to finish the tour but also to consider returning to make up for these dates.”
Fans who purchased tickets for the affected shows were offered a “full refund.”
This news came just two days after Simon had performed at the same venue on June 26th. Following the cancellation, fans took to social media to send their well wishes, expressing concern over his sudden injury.
“Wishing you a speedy recovery, Paul!” one fan commented in response to the announcement.
Another said, “Please take the time you need to heal; we want you back in good health.” A third fan lamented, “We just arrived in Philadelphia from Scotland for a concert. I hope it’s nothing serious.” A fourth fan added encouragement, saying, “Feel better soon; the music is incredible!”
Paul Simon kicked off his current “Quiet Celebration Tour” in February, shortly after performing “Homeward Bound” at the “Saturday Night Live 50th Anniversary Special.” His return to the stage was somewhat unexpected, especially since he seemed to retire in 2018 due to hearing loss.
The tour features songs from his latest album “Seven Poetry Sal,” as well as classics from his solo career and his time with Simon & Garfunkel.
Simon’s wife, Edie Brickell, who is 33 years old, also joined him for performances during this tour. Earlier this year, he remarked about the tour, saying, “I’ve narrowed down my choices to a more acoustic version, making it all quiet.”
The next concert on his schedule is set for July 7th in Long Beach, California, with the tour concluding on August 3rd in Seattle, Washington.
