Tragic Shooting at High School Hockey Game in Rhode Island

On Monday, chaos erupted at the Dennis M. Lynch Arena in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, during a high school hockey game when a shooter opened fire, resulting in the deaths of two individuals. The gunman, reportedly a parent of one of the players, then took his own life.

Witnesses described a frantic scene as a men’s hockey game featuring schools from Blackstone Valley unfolded. Spectators and players sought refuge as shots were fired, creating a terrifying atmosphere.

Pawtucket Police Chief Tina Goncalves indicated that the event seemed to be a “targeted incident” linked to a family dispute that escalated while the hockey team was still playing. Eyewitnesses told media outlets that the shooter had aimed at family members seated near him, leading to a scenario resembling a murder-suicide.

Details regarding the victims remain scarce, including their identities and specific family ties, as officials are still notifying relatives. Police have confirmed that they know who was involved but have withheld public disclosure until all next of kin are informed.

While initial reports suggested that a girl was among the deceased, authorities clarified that both fatalities were adults. Additionally, three other children associated with the shooter were hospitalized with serious injuries.

Initially, only one fatality was reported; however, law enforcement later confirmed that two victims, along with the gunman, died at the scene. Three others were transported to hospitals and are listed in critical condition.

The arena, located just eight miles from Providence, was swiftly surrounded by local law enforcement, the ATF, and the FBI. Emotional scenes unfolded outside as high school players, still in their uniforms, embraced their families before being evacuated.

Pawtucket Mayor Don Grebien remarked on the situation, expressing, “I can’t imagine what the residents are going through. These are high school students…It must be traumatizing.”

Governor Dan McKee also shared condolences via social media, stating that he was keeping a close eye on the situation while extending prayers for the Pawtucket community.

Witness accounts described attempts to overpower the gunman, who ultimately succumbed to a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Coventry Schools Superintendent Don Cowart confirmed that all Coventry students had been safely reunited with their families and mentioned that mental health support would be accessible for those affected.

The Pawtucket Police Department and the FBI assured the public that there is no ongoing threat. Meanwhile, roads surrounding the arena remain closed as investigations continue.
