Walmart Embraces Contactless Payments After Years of Delay

Mobile contactless payment services have been around for about 15 years now, starting with Google Wallet in 2011, which later evolved into Google Pay. Apple entered the scene in 2014 with its own version, Apple Pay. Initially, many shops were slow to adopt this technology; meanwhile, giants like Walmart attempted to create their own payment systems. After nearly two decades of indecision, Walmart is finally accepting Apple Pay and Google Pay. Here’s what you should know the next time you shop there.

Although Google was the first to introduce contactless payments, it was Apple’s arrival that really changed the landscape. Leveraging the popularity of the iPhone and Apple Watch, Apple Pay gained significant traction quickly. Today, Apple Pay is responsible for 50% of in-store transactions in the U.S., while Google Pay accounts for just 17%. This translates to a staggering global spending difference of $9.5 trillion through Apple’s ecosystem, compared to $5.2 trillion via Google.

The initial phase of contactless payments resembled a chaotic free-for-all, with numerous companies competing for dominance. Many retailers even launched their own payment options to vie for customers.

The Downside of Walmart Pay

Back in 2015, Walmart introduced Walmart Pay, aiming to serve as a direct competitor to Apple and Google. The main draw for Walmart was its QR code system, which allowed any smartphone to scan the code at checkout to make payments through a linked Walmart account.

However, the process was somewhat cumbersome compared to the ease of using Apple Pay or Google Pay, which enable users to simply wave their devices near payment terminals with authentication through a fingerprint or FaceID. Walmart Pay also provided Walmart with the ability to track customer purchases, contrasting sharply with the more privacy-oriented approaches of Apple Pay and Google Pay.

This insight into shopping habits was something Walmart had relied on—until now.

Walmart to Accept Contactless Payments

Finally, after much anticipation, Walmart has announced it will allow customers to use Apple Pay and Google Pay for transactions. The rollout has commenced at select locations, with plans for nationwide availability in all Walmart and Sam’s Club stores by the end of 2026. In addition, contactless payment options will come to Walmart and Sam’s Club fuel stations by mid-2027. This means customers can also use contactless cards equipped with EMV chips.

Getting Your Phone Ready for Contactless Payments

With this shift, it’s a good idea to ensure your phone is properly configured before you head to Walmart.

For Apple Pay, just open the Wallet app on your iPhone, tap the plus sign in the upper right corner, and select “Debit or Credit Card.” You can either place your iPhone against your card to add it automatically through the EMV chip or enter the details manually. You may need to verify this info with your bank through an app or a call. And that’s it—you’ll be ready to use Apple Pay.

If you’re using Android, open the Wallet app, tap the plus button, and select “Payment card” and then “new credit or debit.” You can allow the app to capture a photo of the card or enter the details yourself. Verify the information with your bank, and you’re good to go with Google Pay.

Ultimately, using contactless payments through iPhone or Android is not only more straightforward but also safer than traditional card payments or alternatives like Walmart Pay.
