Democrats accused him of being a “waste of money.” They said, “It was an excuse not to reduce nuclear weapons.” They called him a “dunce” and a “cowboy” and joked that he was playing a “Star Wars” game on the show. They even went so far as to “take every possible budgetary measure to prevent it.”
There was one person who took Reagan's SDI plan seriously: Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev, the last leader of the Soviet Union before its dissolution.
As Gorbachev himself admitted, “SDI was a game changer because the Soviet Union would never be able to catch up with our technological know-how and scientific capabilities, and they would never have the money to build this system,” Levin said. .
Israel also recognized the benefits of the program.
It was an extremely beneficial adoption for this country, as it “adopted” the idea and “improved” it to suit its own needs.
“Unlike any other country on earth, the Israelis have a strategic missile defense system, thank God,” Levin said.
