Flanagan Fundraiser Sparks Controversy Amid Medicaid Fraud Scandal

Minnesota’s Lt. Gov. and Democratic Senate candidate Peggy Flanagan is scheduled to attend a fundraiser hosted by Dr. Nathan Chomilo, who has served as the state’s Medicaid medical director since January 2020. This fundraiser, set for October 1, has raised eyebrows considering the backdrop of significant Medicaid fraud that has recently come to light.

The controversy is primarily linked to various Medicaid-funded initiatives, like autism services, that have become central to a broader scandal. While Chomilo did not directly handle payments or fraud investigations, his connection to Flanagan is being scrutinized. Critics question whether her association with him suggests a lack of commitment to addressing the fraud issue that has plagued Minnesota’s Medicaid programs.

“It seems like those who should be monitoring the funds are more focused on fundraising for Flanagan,” remarked Dustin Grage, who first reported on the fundraiser. He suggested this connection raises serious concerns.

Chuck Darrell, a former communications director at the Minnesota Family Council, expressed similar sentiments, hinting at a deeper look into the situation with a simple, “Hmm….”

Republican State Rep. Kristin Robbins pointed out that fraud has been a pervasive problem in Minnesota’s Medicaid program throughout the Walz-Flanagan administration. She argued that Chomilo, given his role, should have been aware of the ongoing issues and added that Flanagan’s actions reflect a disregard for taxpayers.

Chomilo, previously highlighted for his commitment to integrating community collaboration and racial equity in Medicaid, has called for significant changes in policy. However, Robbins believes Flanagan’s alignment with Chomilo showcases a leaning toward the more radical aspects of the Democratic party when it comes to health care.

As the November elections approach, the focus on fraud continues to resonate with voters. Flanagan will face Republican Michele Tafoya, who has frequently criticized Flanagan’s record, especially given her longstanding role alongside Governor Walz during this period of scandal.

In response to the controversy, Flanagan acknowledged the seriousness of Medicaid fraud and outlined steps taken by her administration to combat it. She mentioned the establishment of a new office of inspector general and increases in staffing for the attorney general’s office to decisively address these issues.
