Pelosi calls McConnell’s Trump endorsement ‘sad, professional tragedy’

House Speaker Emeritus Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) condemned Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) for supporting former President Trump, calling it a “sad, professional tragedy” given their history. ” he called.

Pelosi acknowledged that over the years, she and McConnell have been able to find common ground on some issues. But the former speaker said it was “sad” to support Trump even as the Senate was close to removing him from office over his alleged role in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol. Ta.

“To know how bad the president’s predecessor was on all of this and then come to the conclusion to support him, when we thought we were going to convict him, he was so close to being guilty.” “And now he’s been convicted,” Pelosi said Friday during an appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

“It’s really, really sad. And this is a sad conclusion to a career as a strategist. Again, we didn’t see much of an agreement, but I appreciate the perspective he brought and how we I respected his ability to work with me,” she continued, adding, “It really…in my view, he had to go through a sad, professional tragedy.”

Her comments came just days after McConnell, who announced late last month that he was stepping down from the Senate Republican leadership, fully endorsed Trump as presidential candidate, and the two have not spoken for more than three years due to differences of opinion. I hadn’t.

Pelosi claimed that McConnell knew “full well” that Trump was “guilty” of storming the Capitol, and that the Kentucky Republican also spoke about it on the Senate floor.

“In that this beautiful Capitol building was stormed, he is not only concerned about the physical building, but what is happening here, our Constitution, our oath of office to peacefully transfer power,” Pelosi said. “We knew what was happening was wrong in terms of our ability to protect our people.” . “He even waxed eloquent about it on the floor, but then he didn’t authorize the creation of a bipartisan commission.”

“Why would he do something like that? Maybe he will explain to the world,” she added.

McConnell’s endorsement of Trump also follows the suspension of former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley’s bid for the White House. Haley is Trump’s only remaining challenger in the race, and her withdrawal would pave the way for the former president to secure the Republican nomination.

Despite pressure from other Republicans, the former governor has not endorsed Trump. Instead, she argued, she needed to “earn the votes” of her supporters.
