Pelosi: Reopening Alcatraz is the 'dumbest proposal' from the Trump administration

Pelosi Criticizes Trump’s Proposal to Reopen Alcatraz

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif) voiced strong disapproval of President Trump’s plan to reopen the historic Alcatraz prison located near San Francisco.

“The nature of crime has not changed, and turning Alcatraz into a prison again won’t work long-term. I seriously doubt it will happen,” Pelosi remarked during an interview on MSNBC’s “Chris Jansing Report,” where she often expresses her critiques of Trump.

She went on to say, “It’s not just about crime; it’s primarily driven by money, and the decisions being made are foolish.” Pelosi added that this initiative is, in her opinion, the “most ridiculous initiative” put forth by the current administration.

Trump’s suggestion to revive Alcatraz surfaced earlier this month. He described it as a measure aimed at dealing with “the most ruthless and violent criminals in America.” The president mentioned that “conceptual work” related to the project began about six months ago in collaboration with “various prison development companies.”

He expressed a vision of Alcatraz as a representation of resilience, highlighting its iconic status as a prison surrounded by shark-infested waters. Trump previously stated on social media that he’s keen on “renovating and rebuilding” this famous landmark.

Interior Secretary Doug Burgham and Attorney General Pam Bondy also visited the site on Thursday, advocating for plans to transform the closed prison into a detention center.

Burgham asserted on social media that “this administration is focused on restoring safety, justice, and order in our streets.”

Alcatraz was shut down in 1963 due to its high operational costs. Currently, it operates as a national park, drawing more than a million visitors each year.

“Now, it serves as a tourist attraction for arts and community activities, which this administration doesn’t seem to appreciate,” Pelosi remarked. “Environmental considerations also appear to be off their radar.”

Having represented much of San Francisco for nearly four decades, Pelosi previously criticized the idea of reopening prisons in a written statement, stating, “The only source of inspiration for this misguided concept seems to be an old Hollywood movie.”
