Pence discusses Trump’s Middle East visit: ‘I’ve never supported presidents criticizing America abroad’

In a recent interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” former Vice President Mike Pence voiced his concerns about remarks made by Trump during his trip to the Middle East. He expressed that he is “not a fan of the US president criticizing America on foreign soil,” particularly in relation to his comments about the Saudi Arabian president.

Pence stated, “To question the Saudi Arabian president about the ongoing war on terrorism and label it as nation-building and interventionist was, I think, damaging to the generations of Americans who’ve served in uniform and fought in Afghanistan and Iraq.” He highlighted the significance of the speech being delivered in Saudi Arabia, noting it was the home of 15 of the 19 hijackers involved in the 9/11 attacks, and added that it was unfortunate Osama bin Laden wasn’t mentioned.

Trump’s trip included stops in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates, where he focused on promoting business deals with these Gulf nations. During a speech in Saudi Arabia, he criticized US involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan while praising the progress of those countries without American intervention.

“The stunning developments in Riyadh and Abu Dhabi weren’t the result of foreign intervention, as seen with the huge investments made by so-called state builders, neoconservatives, or liberal nonprofits that failed in places like Kabul and Baghdad,” Trump remarked. “The people here have built their nations and guided their futures.” He further expressed admiration for the local achievements.

Trump’s comments echoed sentiments that have sparked controversy, particularly among families affected by the 9/11 attacks, with some claiming that Saudi Arabia had a role in the tragedy, though the government denies these allegations.

In addition to his remarks, Trump praised Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, despite international tensions surrounding bin Salman, especially regarding the assassination of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018. “He’s an incredible guy. I’ve known him a long time. There’s no one like him,” Trump said, expressing his fondness for the Crown Prince.

After distancing himself from Trump over the former president’s role in the 2020 election aftermath and the Capitol riots, Pence critiqued the Middle East visit. However, he acknowledged the economic benefits, stating the trip was “highly successful for the American economy,” with Trump securing significant financial agreements, including a noteworthy deal for Boeing aircraft.
