Pence says it’s ‘unacceptable’ for Trump to call Jan. 6 defendants hostages

Former Vice President Mike Pence said Sunday that former President Trump’s reference to people charged with crimes related to the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol as “hostages” as they move through the criminal justice system is ” It is unacceptable.”

“I think it’s very unfortunate that when American hostages are being held in Gaza, the president and other leaders would call people who are going through our justice system hostages,” Pence said. spoke on CBS News’ “Face the Nation.”

“And that’s completely unacceptable,” he said.

Pence emphasized the gravity of the events as he was one of the primary targets of the angry mob that stormed the Capitol on January 6, 2021. A gallows was erected outside the Capitol, and rioters chanted “Hang Mike Pence!”

“I was there on January 6th. Margaret, I have no doubt that some people got caught up in the moment and entered the Capitol. And they certainly participated in the nonviolent activities that day. You have a right to legal due process,” Pence told CBS host Margaret Brennan. “But I think the assault on a police officer in circumstances that ultimately cost him a life was tragic that day, and I will never take that lightly.”

Pence’s comments came two days after he announced he would not support the former president, who was twice his running mate in 2016 and 2020.

On Saturday, President Trump called the Jan. 6 prisoners hostages and said, “They’ve been horribly wronged.
