Pence Critiques Trump’s Acceptance of Qatar’s Luxury Jet
In a recent conversation, former Vice President Pence expressed concerns regarding President Trump’s acceptance of luxury jets from the Qatari government, describing it as “inconsistent” with U.S. security interests and suggesting that he ought to reject the offer.
“We all remember Qatar’s history. We have a military base there, and I have relatives deployed in the area. But Qatar has often played both sides. They’ve supported groups like Hamas,” Pence remarked during an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”
“I hope the president reconsiders this decision,” Pence told host Kristen Welker. He further suggested that if Qatar wishes to provide a gift, that $400 million could be better spent on enhancing the infrastructure of the military base.
Trump, on the other hand, staunchly defended his choice to accept the Boeing 747-8, valued at around $400 million, dismissing concerns from lawmakers across the political spectrum.
“I just want to clarify that it’s a radical left narrative,” Trump stated in an interview with Fox News’ Bret Baier. “They want me to pay $1 billion, which just shows how absurd this is.”
The jet is set to be delivered to the Department of Defense to replace the aging Air Force One, which has been in service for over three decades. Later, the plane will be transferred to the Presidential Library.
“This is meant for the U.S. Air Force when there’s a president. It’s like what happened with Ronald Reagan when they didn’t want it anymore and it was repealed,” Trump noted in his discussion with Baier.
He continued, saying, “Boeing is so sluggish that you need several years to get new planes out. They should be able to produce them more quickly.”
Pence reiterated his stance that Trump should refuse the gift, pointing to the possible implications of an Intelligence Report and “a very realistic constitutional issue.”
“The Constitution explicitly prohibits civil servants from accepting gifts from foreign entities,” Pence stated to Welker. “While there may be some legal loopholes, I really believe it’s a bad idea. I hope the President will reflect on this more carefully.”
