A massive search was underway Tuesday for a 64-year-old grandmother who may have fallen into a 30-foot sinkhole while searching for her cat in Pennsylvania.
Elizabeth Pollard of Unity Township went missing Monday afternoon after going out looking for her 5-year-old granddaughter and Pollard's missing cat, Pepper. WPXI Report.
According to local newspapers, the girl was found safe in her grandmother's car around 2:50 a.m. Tuesday. The car was found near a large sinkhole behind the Union Bar and Grill on Monday.
Emergency crews gathered along the sinkhole, digging and searching for Pollard, but as of Tuesday morning there was still no sign of her grandmother.
Her family reported her missing around 1 a.m., and witnesses told police they saw her looking for her cat around 3 p.m. the previous day.
State Police spokesman Steve Limani said the sinkhole was likely part of an old coal mine shaft in the area.
Police did not provide further details and said the search and investigation were ongoing.
The scene in Unity Township is similar to that on the other side of the world, where tourists disappeared into an eight-metre-high sinkhole that appeared in central Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, over the summer.
