Pennsylvania homeowner charged with shooting Instacart driver who was delivering wife’s grocery order

A Pennsylvania homeowner is suspected of shooting and killing an Instacart driver outside his home over the weekend after mistaking him for an intruder as he tried to deliver an order, authorities said.

Nicholas Szabo, 43, is accused of shooting a delivery driver in the leg Saturday near his family's Newton Township garage after his home's security camera detected movement, according to the South Abington Police Department. Multiple media outlets reported that he had been arrested.

“(The husband) goes outside, sees the person, doesn't engage in any verbal confrontation or anything, just shoots,” Chief Paul Wolf said. he told McClatchy News.

Police later learned that Sabo's wife had used Instacart to order groceries without telling her husband. WBRE/WYOU reported.

Police said the victim alerted Sabo's home surveillance when he arrived to make a delivery, leading his wife to believe someone was trying to break into a utility trailer on their property.

Sabo then goes outside with a gun and confronts the man, blowing off both of the man's legs with one bullet.

The driver ran back to his car, where his wife and child were waiting, and drove a short distance before calling police, the report said.

An Instacart delivery driver is currently in stable condition after being shot in the leg. Reuters

Police said the man was taken to a local hospital, underwent surgery and is currently in stable condition.

Sabo was charged with recklessly endangering another person.

Media reported that additional charges may be filed as the investigation progresses.
