Disturbing Discovery in Pennsylvania
A man from Pennsylvania is facing an alarming number of charges after police found “more than 100 complete and partial human bones and sets” in his home and storage area, with a local prosecutor describing the situation as “a horror movie come true.” The individual, Jonathan Gerlach, 34, was detained this week during an investigation into thefts of graves and mausoleums at Mount Moriah Cemetery in suburban Philadelphia.
“It’s like detectives walked into a horror movie. This is an incredible scene,” stated District Attorney Tanner Rouse, adding that the horrifying discovery left not only him but also the detectives and the medical examiner baffled. “We’re dealing with a massive number of bones right now, but the investigation is ongoing, and it will take time to identify them, as some are infants just months old while others date back centuries.”
The shocking situation unfolded on a Tuesday night. Police were keeping an eye on Mount Moriah Cemetery when they reportedly saw various bones and skulls visible in Gerlach’s vehicle. As he left the cemetery, carrying burlap bags and crowbars, he was apprehended. During questioning, Gerlach admitted to stealing around 30 sets of human remains.
According to the Delaware County District Attorney’s Office, the investigation revealed that over 100 human bones, both complete and partial, had been recovered from Gerlach’s residence and storage units. It’s emphasized that this investigation is still unfolding.
Gerlach is charged with more than 450 counts, which include 100 counts of abuse of a corpse and unlawful theft of property. His bail has been set at $1 million, with an arraignment hearing planned for January 20th.
“It’s tragic for the families affected by this. My heart goes out to those wondering if these could be their lost loved ones,” Rouse commented, reflecting on the emotional toll of the investigation.
