A pig seeking extra heat was responsible for setting a house on fire in Pennsylvania, its owner said.
A family in Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania, said a pot-bellied pig set their house on fire after stacking too much hay near a heat lamp to stay warm.
The family talked about WTAE 4 ABC He said he built a temporary outdoor home for the pig, named Albert, and provided it with overhead shelter, hay and a heat lamp. However, the family believes Albert placed the extra haystack too close to a heat lamp to keep out the cold, which caused the fire.
“We knew it was going to snow, so we had added extra hay for him, and he had a little heating light on the front,” said owner Margaret Painter. “He must have thrown the hay against the heat wrap and set the house on fire.”
The incident occurred just hours before the New Year's bell rang when the family saw an orange light outside their window.
“When I opened the door, it just popped into my house,” homeowner Tom Painter said. “I tried to put it out, but the windows started exploding.”
The parents explained to local reporters that the family, including the children, were able to escape the fire, but their pets were not so lucky. Two of the artist's cats died in the fire, while three other cats and one dog survived.
The 8-year-old pig in question also survived, but unfortunately suffered burns.
Multiple news outlets reported that Albert was taken to a sanctuary and then taken to The Ohio State University Veterinary Medical Center, where he was treated for smoke inhalation and burns.
He will reportedly be adopted in a month from the Kindred Spirits Rescue Ranch in Darlington Township, Beaver County, Pennsylvania.
