The Pentagon has deepened the mystery surrounding a drone over New Jersey and poured cold water on claims that the drone came from Iran.
Defense Department deputy spokeswoman Sabrina Singh told reporters Wednesday that defense officials do not believe the unidentified flying object came from a “foreign entity or adversary.”
“There are no Iranian ships off the coast of the United States, and there are no so-called motherships launching drones toward the United States.”
Singh was responding to explosive claims made earlier Wednesday by Republican New Jersey Rep. Jeff Van Drew, who told Fox News that the drones seen nightly over the Garden State are “It is very likely that it is being deployed by Iran,” a highly placed source was quoted as saying.
“I'll tell you the truth: Iran launched a mothership with these drones on board,” he said. “This is off the east coast of the United States. They launched a drone.”
“These drones should be shot down,” he said, adding that “the military is on full alert against this.”
In response to these allegations, Mr. Singh asserted that “there is no truth to them.” However, she did not offer another theory as to where the drones were coming from.
