Pentagon Initiates Thorough Examination of US Withdrawal from Afghanistan

US Defense Secretary Initiates Review of Afghanistan Withdrawal

Washington: US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has called for a “comprehensive review” regarding the chaotic military withdrawal from Afghanistan that took place in August 2021.

It’s somewhat unclear how this review will differ from earlier investigations conducted by various parties, including the US military, the State Department, and even some Republicans from President Donald Trump’s administration.

Critics might assert that Hegseth is politicizing the matter. The Biden administration has pointed fingers at the confusion stemming from the previous administration’s insufficient military planning and a 2020 agreement that reduced troop levels with the Taliban.

During his campaign, Trump often criticized Biden for the withdrawal process.

In a memo, Hegseth emphasized the necessity for accountability regarding the withdrawal process, suggesting that a thorough review is essential after three months of reflection.

“This is an important measure to restore faith and trust among those in uniform and all Americans, especially considering the casualties and equipment losses incurred,” he remarked.

The review will be led by Pentagon spokesman and senior advisor Sean Parnell, along with a board that includes individuals like Stuart Scheller, a former Marine who openly criticized the withdrawal.

High-ranking US officials, including then-Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and General Mark Milley, have already provided testimonies before Congress.

The US Central Command, responsible for operations in the Middle East, is also investigating an attack by the Islamic State that resulted in the deaths of 13 US service members and many Afghans during the last days of the withdrawal.
