U.S. Military’s Drone Operations at the Southern Border

The U.S. military provided a rare glimpse into its operations at the southern border, disclosing that about 100 suspected cartel drones were taken down just in August. This information comes from a senior official within the War Department.

This announcement marks the first time the Pentagon has shared details about the frequency of its counter-drone technology usage, which includes advanced laser systems, aimed at intercepting cartel drones attempting to cross into the U.S.

The official noted that these drone takedowns were executed by Task Force–Southern Border, utilizing specialized counter-drone equipment sourced and integrated from other military units.

What’s interesting is that each operation was meticulously planned in collaboration with the Mexican military and border authorities. This strategy was designed to avoid any accidental clashes between forces operating on either side of the border.

The operations are part of a larger initiative to swiftly deploy defenses against drones, incorporating various technologies along with trained personnel and updated military protocols. The emphasis here is on not depending on a single “silver bullet” solution to address this multifaceted challenge.

The Pentagon stated that the U.S. has been employing counter-drone technology to bolster security at the border. Pentagon Press Secretary Kingsley Wilson explained that these defenses aim to safeguard personnel and border security operations from drone threats linked to cartels.

“These actions are closely coordinated with Mexican military and border authorities to ensure safety and prevent conflicts on both sides of the border,” Wilson added.

This news emerges as the Trump administration continues to exert military force against cartels across the Western Hemisphere, including carrying out lethal strikes aimed at suspected drug traffickers. Just earlier this week, top officials highlighted President Trump’s directive on military action during a press call.

One official remarked, “So, the president directed, the Department of War executed, the first ever plan and strategy to use direct military force to defend the homeland from this threat.” The effects of these actions are noted to have led to a significant drop in U.S. casualties inflicted by cartels, marking what could be called a historic change.
