On Friday’s episode of HBO’s “Real Time,” host Bill Maher argued that while prices are higher than they used to be, people are better off financially than they were four years ago, yet President Joe Biden is “too ineffective in holding himself up as an explainer.”
Maher said:The Washington Post To tell,”Nearly everything Americans believe about the economy is wrong“Interestingly, 55% believe the economy is in contraction or recession, not the other way around. Half believe the unemployment rate is at a 50-year high, 4%, and about half believe the stock market is down; it’s at an all-time high. … How can Joe Biden, who has done pretty well economically, continue to campaign when people don’t think he’s better off now than he was four years ago, when in fact he is better off than he was four years ago?”
Maher then echoed CNN senior political commentator and former Obama adviser David Axelrod in saying prices were rising, adding, “And the problem is, Biden is, I’m sorry, too weak to step out as an explainer. That’s why we need someone with a bit more oomph.”[ce] To make a point.”
