In light of a viral video capturing a military veteran struggling to walk on the tarmac at a California airport, there’s been a significant push for donations—over $135,000 has been raised to assist with the man’s medical and daily living expenses.
This footage, recorded at Orange County’s John Wayne Airport, has racked up close to 6 million views on TikTok, triggering an outpouring of support.
Rashinda Thackeray, a passenger who filmed the incident, remarked on how painful it was to see the airport worker in such distress while trying to fulfill his responsibilities.
“It was tough to watch him exert so much effort when he could barely move,” Thackeray expressed. “I feel like there must be a way to help him retire.”
The individual in question, James Blair, is a U.S. Navy veteran with a decade of experience as an aircraft mechanic before transitioning to a role in refueling aircraft.
Blair shared with CBS News that years of physically intense labor have affected his body, particularly his knees.
Despite enduring chronic pain, he has continued working while also caring for his 90-year-old mother in hospice care.
Following the video’s release, donations started pouring in to help cover his medical expenses.
The fundraising efforts have now accumulated over $135,000, inching towards a target of $200,000.
“When I first saw the video and the donations began coming in, I couldn’t help but laugh,” Blair stated. “After two decades in this line of work, I thought no one cared.”
Blair noted that the donations have had a transformative impact, easing some of the financial strain tied to his health issues.
The comments section of the video quickly filled up with messages of encouragement from people familiar with Blair and others whose hearts were moved by his story.
Many described him as a dedicated employee who has always prioritized others.
“That’s my colleague James,” one commenter mentioned. “I’ve worked alongside him for five years, and having conversations with him is the highlight of my shifts.”
Some insisted that Blair truly deserved the support he was receiving, citing his military background and long tenure at the airport.
“Our veterans deserve better,” one user affirmed.
The success of the fundraiser also drew praise, with remarks like, “This is how we show respect for our veterans.”
