A 23-year-old from Malibu, California, has been ordered to stand trial for murder and vehicular manslaughter following a crash that occurred a year and a half ago. The incident took place on October 17, 2023, where Fraser Baughn was reportedly speeding between 93 and 104 mph in a 45 mph zone. Tragically, four female students—20-year-old Niamh Rolston, 21-year-olds Peyton Stewart, Asha Weir, and Deslyn Williams—lost their lives in the accident.
The crash happened around 8:30 PM on a notoriously dangerous section of the Pacific Coast Highway, often referred to as “Dead Man’s Curve.” Witnesses offered varying accounts of Baughn’s driving behavior leading up to the crash. His lawyer, Michael Kraut, who has notable experience in law, argued that he has never seen a case like this in his years of practice.
Kraut mentioned that one witness admitted to tailing Baughn during a bout of road rage, which he believes contributed to the crash. Interestingly, the defense claims that other witnesses supported the assertion that Baughn was only traveling 70 mph before the incident, contradicting the higher allegations.
The lawyer recounted an event before the crash where a blinding light caused Baughn to swerve, resulting in the collision. He noted, “The woman in front of him had her lights shining directly into his eyes, which made him veer unexpectedly.” He emphasized the emotional toll this event has taken on all involved, including Baughn and his family, while acknowledging the tragic nature of the case from all perspectives.
Superior Court Judge Diego H. Edver had previously set a hearing related to Baughn’s arrest for July 1. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office has been approached for further comments regarding the case.
