Person at Amsterdam airport dead after falling into KLM plane engine

A man died Wednesday after falling inside a KLM Royal Dutch Airlines plane at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport while its engines were running, authorities said.

The incident occurred as KLM Flight 1341, an Embraer ERJ-190 jet, was preparing to depart for the Danish town of Billund.

“A fatal accident occurred today at Schiphol Airport when a person was trapped inside a running aircraft engine. Sadly, the person has now passed away,” KLM said in a statement.

The airline added: “We are currently engaging with passengers and staff who witnessed the incident at Schiphol Airport. The circumstances are currently under investigation.”

Schiphol Airport described the scene as a “horrific incident in which a person was trapped inside the plane’s engine.”

The identity of the person killed was not immediately released.

Schiphol Airport said in a statement: “We offer our condolences to the family and our thoughts go out to the passengers and colleagues who witnessed this accident.”

“A person was killed after falling into a running aircraft engine,” the Royal Gendarmerie said in a statement. “All passengers and staff on board the aircraft have disembarked and are being treated.”
