Suspect Arrested for Vandalism at Marquette University’s Historic Church
Authorities have detained a suspect linked to the vandalism at the Church of the Gesu, located on the Marquette University campus in downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin. This incident occurred just nine months after the church had undergone a $10 million renovation.
The individual, a 29-year-old man, was taken into custody last week. He faces charges for resisting and obstructing a police officer in an unrelated incident prior to the early Wednesday morning attack on the church.
Officials mentioned that the suspect is not connected to the university.
Michael R. Simone, the church’s pastor, detailed how the damage was extensive, affecting both upper and lower levels of the church, which was designed to echo the iconic architecture of Western European cathedrals.
Photos from the scene depict broken statues, overturned tables, and candles strewn across the floor.
The recent renovation had involved updates to aging seating, repainting the ceiling, and installing advanced fire detection and security systems.
In response to the vandalism, Marquette University issued a statement expressing sadness over the incident, emphasizing the church’s significance to many in the community. They confirmed the arrest and stated that the investigation is ongoing. While the Church of the Gesù and Marquette are separately incorporated, they share Catholic and Jesuit traditions and a commitment to serve their community.
As of now, Marquette University police have not disclosed any motive behind the suspect’s actions.
Father Simone expressed skepticism that the vandalism was an act of anti-Catholic aggression. However, it’s worth noting that, as reported previously, attacks on Catholic institutions have reportedly surged under the current administration and following significant court rulings.
Since the beginning of 2020, there have been over 547 attacks on Catholic churches across 43 states, according to a Catholic advocacy organization.
