PETA suggests using a hologram instead of Punxsutawney Phil for Groundhog Day

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) reached out to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, on Tuesday. They proposed creating a “state-of-the-art” 3D projection of the groundhog for Gobbler’s Knob, but only if Phil and his family can be retired to a sanctuary.

PETA also mentioned that this projection could offer local weather forecasts. Ingrid Newkirk, PETA’s founder, highlighted in her statement that “pixelated pop stars are headlining concerts and long-dead celebrities are attending conventions,” encouraging the use of technology to allow the real Phil to hibernate peacefully. She urged the club to rethink their “tired tradition” of displaying shy animals and suggested they could instead introduce a more modern, humane event.

PETA pointed out that groundhogs, being naturally timid, prefer to avoid humans and enjoy their burrowing and hibernating habits. However, they argue that Phil is kept in a small enclosure year-round, which limits his ability to experience these natural behaviors.

Newkirk emphasized that an update to the event would attract more visitors and noted that Phil looks more comfortable standing calmly rather than being held awkwardly. According to her, these animals are consistently subjected to loud crowds and human handling, which neglects their well-being.

She criticized the event as outdated and responsible for exploiting wild animals. Newkirk reminded everyone that Phil experiences fear and discomfort just like humans do, which makes it clear he isn’t a willing participant in this annual ritual. With the hologram, she believes the town could still profit without compromising the animal’s welfare.

PETA’s underlying principle is that animals should not be used for entertainment, and they’re even providing free “empathy kits” to those who might need a little more kindness in their lives.
