Alonso Powers Mets to Victory Over Dodgers
LOS ANGELES – Pete Alonso is heating up again.
After spending much of May without a two-homer game, Alonso kicked off Wednesday’s match against the Dodgers looking to change that narrative.
He certainly did, leading the Mets to a solid 6-1 win at Dodger Stadium, while also racking up five RBIs, putting him at the top of the National League.
In the first inning, he sent a two-run homer into the stands and later added a three-run shot, securing the game for New York.
With this win, the Mets marked their fifth victory in the last six games, bouncing back from a previous loss by swiftly establishing control against the Dodgers.
Alonso’s two home runs brought his total to three in just five games, and he now has 53 RBIs this season, tying him with Seiya Suzuki for the NL lead.
Rafael Devers currently leads all of Major League Baseball with 54 RBIs.
The Mets are set to secure the series on Thursday, already holding a 4-2 advantage over the Dodgers this season.
Pitcher Griffin Canning had his work cut out for him, needing to maneuver through a challenging Dodgers lineup while aiming for six solid innings.
Canning previously faced off against Shohei Ohtani and was now tasked with getting through high-caliber hitters like Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman.
He worked through 14 pitches and effectively retired the side, providing a much-needed boost to the tired Mets bullpen. Jose Castillo added two scoreless innings, followed by Lynn Stanek, who gave up a homer in the ninth.
In the first inning, Alonso hit a two-run homer against Tony Gonsolin, sending a clear message early in the game.
With Francisco Lindor and Brandon Nimmo contributing to the offense, Alonso took advantage of a slider on the first pitch he saw, sending it out of the park.
Despite chances to extend their lead further, Gonsolin managed to get out of a jam by retiring Alonso and Baty thereafter.
Juan Soto also had some opportunities, earning two walks during the game, though Alonso had himself a challenging evening at the plate with several strikeouts.
Canning finished strong, ending the fifth inning with a strikeout against Ohtani that wrapped up a productive outing.
The game continued with Castillo facing some difficulty in the seventh, yet he managed to navigate through it. As the eighth inning approached, after Nimmo reached base and Soto walked, Alonso seized the moment to hit his 14th homer of the season.
