Former Transport Secretary Pete Battigigue has vowed to bid for the Senate in Michigan, sparking rumors that he will instead focus on yet another presidential election in 2028.
Buttigieg, former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, was keeping an eye on Michigan Senate seats after Democrat Sen. Gary Peters (D-MI) made no demand for reelection. Sources following the Senator's January announcement I said CNN “seriously watched” Buttigieg running to the open seat. However, he is now refusing to officially run in Michigan.
“I am deeply concerned about who Michigan will elect as governor and send it to the US Senate next year, but I have opposed to competing with either race,” Buttigieg announced Thursday morning.
“I remain keen to support candidates who share our values – And there are people who understand that in this moment, leadership means not only oppose the cruel confusion of today, but also presenting a better alternative vision,” he continued.
My own plan doesn't include running for office in 2026, but I focus on integrating, communicating and supporting the vision of this alternative. Decisions by elected leaders are totally important for how they shape our daily lives. – And the choices made in these years will determine Americans' access to freedom, security, democracy and prosperity throughout our lives.
“Today, our country is clearly free, unsafe, and undemocratic – And it's not thriving very much – More than just 10 weeks ago,” he wrote in his longer description.
Buttigieg is not the only Democrat who is rumored to have quietly toyed the idea of a presidential bid in 2028. Governor Tim Waltz (D-MN), a running buddy of former Vice President Kamala Harris, continues to burn these rumors. New Yorker Radio Hour He would do “whatever it needs.”
“Look, I had no ambition to be president or vice president. I was honored to be asked,” he said. “If I feel I can serve, I do that. And nationwide, people say, “We try you and see how it works, like, 'I'm fine with that.'
He continued, “If I think I can offer something… I'd certainly think about it… I'd do whatever it takes.”
Waltz added speculation by announcing the launch of a National Town Hall tour in the Republican-controlled House District.
“I've hit roads and travel to red states across the country to lend megaphones to people,” he announced. “Your House member may not want to hear, but you'll hear from us anyway.”
