Pete Buttigieg States Democrats Are Overly Committed to the 'Failing' Current System

Buttigieg Advocates for Change Within Democratic Party

Former Transport Secretary Pete Buttigieg expressed in a recent NPR interview that it’s time for Democrats to leave behind their “failed” status quo. He believes that there’s an obsession with the current situation that has not served the party well.

Speaking to NPR’s “Morning Edition,” Buttigieg noted that the Democratic Party needs fresh leadership as it gears up for upcoming midterm elections in 2026 and the presidential election in 2028. He emphasized that it’s problematic for the government to neglect critical institutions and suggested that simply maintaining the status quo isn’t the answer.

“You have a government that burns many of the most important institutions we have in this country, but that’s wrong,” Buttigieg stated. He also insisted that Democrats should adopt a more “spiritual” approach, embracing what works instead of what doesn’t. He pointed out that during the last election cycle, there was a perception that the party was overly concerned with their identity.

Back in May, Buttigieg hinted that many might agree that President Biden’s 2024 campaign could have been detrimental to the party. He has previously critiqued the administration’s handling of significant issues such as the border crisis and ongoing inflation.

Buttigieg served as the Secretary of Transportation under Biden from 2021 to 2025 and previously ran for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020. In March, he announced that he wouldn’t be running for a Senate seat in Michigan in 2026, leading to speculation about a potential presidential candidacy in 2028.
