PetSmart to Close San Francisco Store

PetSmart is set to shut down its sole location in San Francisco. The store, situated at 2675 Geary Blvd., will officially close its doors on Sunday, July 19. The company cited the changing shopping preferences of customers as the reason for the closure, as reported by KTVU.

In a statement, PetSmart noted that many shoppers are opting for online purchasing, auto-shipping, and same-day delivery, prompting them to adjust their service methods in the Bay Area. Beyond selling products, this store also offered a variety of services like dog daycare, camping, boarding, grooming, and training.

PetSmart expressed its commitment to supporting pet owners in San Francisco, assuring that nearby locations, such as the one in Daly City, will remain available, along with convenient online shopping and delivery options, according to SF Gate.

Founded in Phoenix, Arizona in 1987, PetSmart has grown significantly, boasting over 1,680 locations across the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. The company supports more than 50,000 employees and has over 700 veterinary offices.

According to reports, employees affected by this closure will have the chance to transfer to other stores in the Bay Area and receive resources for the transition.

This decision comes on the heels of a recent public hearing where city officials discussed a proposed ban on shops selling live pets. Currently, California law restricts the retail sale of cats, dogs, rabbits, ferrets, gerbils, hedgehogs, and sugar gliders. At present, only fish, amphibians, birds, guinea pigs, hamsters, and reptiles are permitted for sale in California stores.
