Texas native Jordan Spieth sent the Valero Texas Open crowd into a frenzy on Thursday afternoon with a hole-in-one in his home state.
After suffering a double bogey on the par-5 14th hole that pushed him to 4 over for the opening round of the tournament, Spieth wasn’t too happy when he took to the 16th tee box.
But all that changed when he hit a perfect fade off the tee and sent the ball flying 183 yards straight to the flag.
Spieth and the crowd watched as the ball bounced perfectly on the green and made its way toward the hole. The ball never deviated from that line, and was positioned in the center of the cup aiming for a hole-in-one. It was the third of his PGA Tour career.

The crowd went wild and celebrated with their hands in the air, even though they didn’t play their best golf Thursday. Perhaps it was a sigh of relief.
Spieth started the first round with a bogey on the first hole, picked up another bogey on the fourth hole, and made back-to-back birdies on the fifth and sixth holes to get back even. But the roller coaster continued, with a bogey on the 7th and a one-shot on the 9th, making him 2 over through the first nine holes.

He also made bogey on the 11th, but made up for it with a birdie on the 12th. But thanks to the hole-in-one, Spieth appeared to be on the right track to a strong performance. He birdied 17 and made par on 18, finishing with a 1-over 73.

With golf’s first major tournament of the year, the 2024 Masters, taking place next week, many of those invited will want to take a week off to prepare for Augusta National Golf Club. . But Spieth is enjoying playing in his home state, and it’s clear he wants to stay in tournament mode before heading to Georgia.
Spieth will likely be hoping to pick up where he left off on Thursday rather than the up-and-down scores seen in the opener. He finished tied for 76th place.
The past two games have been tough for Spieth, who was excluded from competing in back-to-back tournaments at The Players Championship and Valspar Championship. However, this year, he is 37th in FedEx Cup points (501) after two top-10 finishes, including a third-place finish at the Sentry at the beginning of the year and a sixth-place finish at the WM Phoenix Open.
