Phil Mickelson wore a new look for Wednesday’s practice round at Royal Troon Golf Club ahead of this week’s British Open.
The 2013 British Open champion wore jogging shoes, but not necessarily by choice.
Mickelson, 54, Popular YouTuber and golfer Grant Holbert lost a betThe two, who boast more than 700,000 subscribers, faced off in a match that was published on both their channels on the popular video platform this week.
The stipulation of the match was that if Holbert won, Mickelson would have to wear joggers at this week’s British Open.
But if the six-time major champion were to win, Holbert would have to buy a year’s supply of Four Wellness Coffee for his fans.
As expected, Mickelson didn’t win, and took the defeat in stride in a social media post on Wednesday.
He also posted a photo of himself wearing dark jogger pants and accompanied it with a funny joke.
“As an unfashionable 54 year old, I never thought I could pull off joggers. Looks like I was wrong. Thank you @GrantHorvatGolf. We both won,” Mickelson wrote to X.
The post was somewhat reminiscent of a moment in a YouTube video where Mickelson appears to wonder if the look suits him.
“Wow,” he said, “I don’t know if I can do that. Were joggers for 54-year-olds?”
What’s unclear is whether wearing athleisure clothing during Wednesday’s practice round will live up to the bet, or whether Mickelson will wear athleisure clothing when the tournament starts on Thursday.
As part of the made-for-YouTube bout, Holbert launched into five shots, something he does when competing against pros on his own channel.

Holbert has previously posted videos of himself fighting against the likes of Sergio Garcia and Jon Rahm.
The video was shot at Mickelson’s home course in Rancho Santa Fe, California.
Mickelson is seeking his seventh major win, including the jog.
